THE EL PASO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
JOURNEYS INTO SPACE OCTOBER 17 & 18, 2025
Featuring the film Deep Field: The Impossible Magnitude of Our Universe
with stunning images from the Hubble Space Telescope
that have never before been seen.
EL PASO, TX — Prepare to be captivated by EPSO’s October 17 & 18 concerts with music by two Grammy-award-winning composers, John Williams and Eric Whitacre, plus legendary composer Richard Strauss. EPSO is pleased to present “Space Odyssey” on Friday, October 17 and Saturday, October 18, at 7:30 PM in the Plaza Theatre. With an impressive 84-member orchestra and 32-piece choir, this concert promises to be a magnificent celebration of sound and sight that will leave audiences mesmerized.
Conducted by Bohuslav Rattay, the program will open with music from Adventures on Earth (E.T.) by John Williams. Next, the UTEP Concert Chorale will join EPSO in Eric Whitacre’s Deep Field. His piece is inspired by the world’s most famous space telescope, the Hubble, and is accompanied by the film Deep Field: The Impossible Magnitude of Our Universe. Together, the score and the film tell the story of the Hubble Deep Field, featuring stunning images and revealing over 3,000 galaxies that had never been seen before.
The concerts will conclude with Richard Strauss’s powerful composition, Also sprach Zarathustra. This piece is well-known in popular culture because of its use in the opening sequence of Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film, 2001: A Space Odyssey, symbolizing the dawn of humanity and represents a moment of significant enlightenment and transformation. In addition to a full orchestra, this piece will feature the Plaza Theatre’s Wyler Mighty Wurlitzer Pipe Organ performed by Richard Garven. The Mighty Wurlitzer is one of six organs of its kind. It was shipped from the Wurlitzer factory in North Tonawanda, NY, on July 30, 1930, and debuted when the Plaza Theatre opened on September 12, 1930.
